My Story

Hey, I’m Kent and I come from New Zealand. Like many native English speakers I grew up in a monolingual household and I didn’t start learning languages until high school. Unfortunately for me, I quickly became disillusioned with the traditional methods of language teaching and dropped French after my first year.

It wasn’t until later, in my early twenties when I was on an overseas deployment with the NZ Army in East Timor that I started getting into languages first Tetum and Portuguese (the two official languages of East Timor). This started the itch to travel and I decided to leave the army and spend a year abroad in Heidelberg, Germany with the goal of learning the language.

At the time I didn’t really have an idea on how to go about learning a language. So I enrolled at a local language school taking intensive classes for an entire year. I ended up making a lot of progress, but not as much as I had hoped, going from complete beginner to B2. I came back home feeling disillusioned with my abilities and language learning.

Ever since then I’ve been busy finding ways to improve my language learning methods and learning languages through self-study which I’ve found to be much more rewarding and has led to much better results. I ended up going to university and getting degree Linguistics and German and have since learnt French and become a dad.
